Philosophy

Because of my diverse musical background I cover all aspects of music when teaching including:

-Technique

-A working understanding of harmony through theory and chord structure and I integrate it into the songs students learn.

-Classical note reading

-Ear training

-I teach BOTH the classical note reading style and the chord chart reading styles of Jazz and Pop.

I offer frequent opportunities to perform including recitals as well as CSMTA sponsored events and workshops.

My students learn to read fairly quickly with the method I use.

Background

I have been teaching privately for over 15 years and did my undergraduate work at the CU Boulder School of Music.

After studying classically growing up, My emphasis in music school was in Jazz Piano and Vocal Performance.

I played in a Jazz ensemble while attending the University and I did my senior thesis on african polyrhythmic drum ensembles.

I have studied piano since then with some of the most accomplished Jazz players in town. My use and understanding of harmony is fairly advanced and I use it to compose and perform my original music with my own ensemble.

I have been a member of the Colorado Music Teacher's Association.

I have completed my classroom teaching/education program at Metro State University.
